The #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci introduces an unforgettable new character: Archer, a straight-talking former World War II soldier fresh out of prison for a crime he didn't commit.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of do's and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job--and don't ever associate with loose women.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment--and a stiff drink--leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.

Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.

When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison . . . if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

Not up to Par for Baldacci

Poor writing. Repetitive plot / descriptions. Non- sensible plot and ending. Not what I expect from Baldacci, it was like he needed a quick pay day and got paid by the word.

Warning : may cause a loss of sleep

Found it by accident. Stayed up late two nights in a row reading. Sleep I do not regret losing. I really enjoy good thrillers/ mysteries and as a student of world war 2, I found the combination compelling. Being a lawyer, I enjoyed the courtroom scene at the end. A little icing on the cake.

Awesome Book - One Good Deed

This book was so good that I read it in two days. Hopefully there will be another Archer book in the near future.

Derivative but enjoyable

I enjoyed the pacing and suspense of this book and the effective evocation of the post-war 40’s. But as one who has enjoyed many of David Baldacci’s books over the years I find myself asking why he need to copy Lee Child’s. One knight errant Army get with no middle name who gate off a bus and into trouble is sufficient.

One Good Deed

I really, really enjoyed this book. A. Archer is a great character, flaws and all. Plot had me guessing right til the end. Just pre-ordered the next book extending Archer’s journey. Can’t wait to read it!

Great read!

Riveting storyline and likable characters make this a fast-paced read that will keep you guessing. Really enjoyed the author’s ability to capture the spirit of the post-WWII American south.

There Great book! This is an unusual entry for this author.

There is no Atlee Pine in this book. I enjoyed seeing Archer “become” someone so unexpected. I like being fooled to the very end of a book. This book is so much more than the ordinary “I just have to figure it out before” novel. Highly recommended!

Excellent story.

I was expecting detective Shaw to show up in court when Mr. Archer was defending himself. Otherwise I learned a great deal about the criminal justice system.

I love it, couldn’t stop reading it. I hope we get to see Archer in other novels.

Absolutely wonderful!

Mr. Baldacci introduces an interesting new protagonist in this wonderful book. It is beautifully written, set in an earlier era of America’s history, but in a way that has much resonance for where the country is at this time. Baldacci always populates his novels with fascinating and well rounded supporting characters, which I thoroughly enjoy, and going along with Archer on this journey was a wonderful adventure. Lots of fun and highly recommended!

Beyond disappointing

Always look forward to a new Baldacci novel. I can only assume Archer is a new series of books but he shouldn’t bother. Writing and crispness of plot not what we’ve become accustomed to. 1950’s setting and read like a really bad 50’s movie.

I have read all his books and like Grisham he is getting very boring. Not very good. Very slow read and the character is very boring. Need to back to the Camel Club or King and Maxwell. John Puller is good too but similar to Jack Reacher.

Terrific New Character

I sure hope we get to go on a few more adventures with Aloysius Archer. He possesses a sort of naïve, charming intelligence coupled with a strong sense of curiosity and a good soul. All of the charm and dark side of post-war, rural America is in this story. I was left with a feeling of hopefulness. Loved it.

Pretty boring. Baldacci May have intended to copy Jack Reacher but failed miserably.

Loved the book

Baldacci is a great writer. His books have never failed me. My only complaint is that they end. One Good Deed isn’t another great one.

One Good Deed needs help

I have read all his books and like Grisham he is getting very boring. Not very good. Very slow read and the character is very boring. Need to back to the Camel Club or King and Maxwell. John Puller is good too but similar to Jack Reacher.

One Good Deed

OK, but not up to what I expect from him. New Hero, but a little too far from reality.

Good read and well thought out ending that was not rushed. Baldacci never fails. I hope he makes a series out of this new character Archer.

Loved it.

Twists and Turns

Starts out slow like a locomotive starting on a journey, but once it gets up to speed, watch out, it keeps barreling on; nicely done Mr Baldacci !

I loved it!!

Great story, very well written as usual, fun to read.

Beyond disappointing

Always look forward to a new Baldacci novel. I can only assume Archer is a new series of books but he shouldn’t bother. Writing and crispness of plot not what we’ve become accustomed to. 1950’s setting and read like a really bad 50’s movie.

Terrible

Could not even get half way thru, disappointing for Baldacci. Boo hiss
